Are there any other challenges we should be considering? Please provide details in the box below.
The city centre isn't everyone's destination, whereas current public transport services assume that it is. Design of street layout in new housing developments, both recently completed and in the course of construction build in car dependency. Design guidelines shouldn't assume that all dwellings require car parking spaces. Many residents move into the city because they wish to no longer depend on a car. Insist on the provision of local shops and community space (indoors and outdoors) in new housing developments. Restrict expansion of our of town shopping centres, which abstract revenue from the traditional High Street shops. Build on changes in the new Highway code, that consider the pedestrian and cyclist above that of the motorist. "Shared Space", adoption of a 20mph limit throughout the city -at which speed cyclists can co-exist sparing road space, avoiding much of the requirement for major infrastructure investment. Cross city cycle paths/ pedestrian routes. eg. Extension of Great Western way northwards, cross (under) the A49 with pedestrian access to the Homer Trading. Getting children to walk/ cycle to school
Which areas of Hereford would benefit from better public transport? Please provide details in the box below.
There should be a genuine bus interchange with co-ordinated service timetables that enable timely cross city journeys without excessive waiting times. This could be at the Station Transport hub or at one of several locations - with services stopping an multiple city centre locations not just one (as currently happens with most services that terminate at the City Bus Station besides Tesco). Services that enter the city on anyone street, should provide a regular frequent service not be bunched together.
Do you cycle, wheel or walk in Hereford currently? Please tick as many as apply.
• Walk
If yes, what are the challenges that need to be overcome? Please tick as many as apply.
• Safety of pedestrians / better walking routes / safe crossing points
• Motor vehicle speeds
• Exposure to pollution
If no, what might encourage you to? Please tick as many as apply.
• Slower motor vehicle speeds
• Safer routes for cyclists / better cycling infrastructure / lanes / segregation
• Safer routes for pedestrians / pedestrian crossing points
Any other things that might encourage you? Please describe these in the box below.
Slowing motor vehicle speeds will automatically make it safer for cyclists and pedestrians, without the need for any significant infrastructure expenditure. "Shared space" will also slow vehicles and allow the removal of street furniture.
Would you like to provide details of specific locations or measures to be put in place that would make Hereford streets more people friendly? Please describe these in the box below.
A 20mph speed limit on all city streets from Red Hill to the Starting Gate; from Belmont to Tupsley, from Wyevale Garden Centre to the Worcester Road including the Holme Lacy Road to the turn for Rotherwas Chapel. Compliance? At busy times all it will take is one vehicle to keep to 20mph and everyone following will be forced to comply. This will provide opportunities to remove traffic lights. There are no traffic signals at the junction of Southbank Road and Aylestone Hill. Motorists can be polite at other junctions also which will improve road capacity/ traffic flow.
What would encourage you to use the Park and Choose sites? Please tick as many as apply.
• Bicycle stores
• Regular bus service / other transfer to destination
Any other things that might encourage you to use Park and Choose? Please describe these in the box below.
Bicycle stores should be placed/ or take over a small number of present city centre car parks, enabling cyclists to walk the 200meters or so to their final destination. These cycle stores should be covered, secure, well lit with CCTV monitoring. Out of city park and choose should be for those arriving by vehicle only. Only cycles should be beryl bikes for hire.
Where do you think the Park and Choose sites should be to encourage you to use them? Please note locations in the box below.
I live within a 15 minute walk to High Town, so this question doesn't apply. For the next question, where I have stated "development site" would include provision for covered cycle storage.
Which of the existing car parks would be best used for green space, which do you think would work best for development sites, and which should be kept as a car park? When considering car park sites, the masterplan will have to take account of a range of factors including location, usage and constraints such as archaeology, flood risk, site layout, etc.

What else could we introduce to encourage you not to take your car into the city? Please describe in the box below.
Charging city centre businesses for off street parking spaces on their own property for employees/ customers. A congestion/ pollution charge for vehicles entering the city would unfairly penalise through traffic
Is there anything else we should be considering for development within the city? Please describe in the box below.
Well this was what was planned 15 years ago ... Hereford Futures, Edgar Street Grid, canal side Urban Village. I agree 100% with your development proposals.
Are there any specific heritage assets we need to bear in mind? Please describe in the box below.
Again, agree 100%. Current issues include the Shire Hall and City Town Hall on St. Owens Street.
Are there any other areas which might benefit from enhancement and what would you like to see there? Please describe in the box below.
Footpaths alongside the Wye as a route for pedestrians and cyclists. Improved signage. Development of a short circular route for tourists - Old bridge, Bishops Meadow to the Victoria Bridge, Castle Green, Castle Street, Cathedral Green, Nell Gwynne Street and return to Bridge Street/ Old Bridge. A standard toolkit of materials should be used across the city. Each project should not pick and choose the materials used.
Is there anything else you think we should be doing to enhance the natural environment within the city? Please let us know in the box below.
All the above are great ideas. Inclusion in the above of the Gloucester Canal is noted, but it is the Council's own actions that mean that the plans outlined 15 years ago to restore the canal basin (still there in the Core Strategy) can no longer be implemented because of short termism in their own decision making. Disappointing.

Listen to your electorate and not the so called experts who don't live here and don't worry about the additional pollution you are creating due to your inability to accept that there is a need for a new outer relief road. You can only implement these variety projects if you look at all aspects of travel instead of forcing your views on everyone. There is a need to be able to travel by car from South to North without going through the city centre. Wake up and listen to the public !!!

Listen to the views of the general public , you are NOT listening atbthe moment. Provide an outer road to allow people who have to use their cars to travel north south east west without the need to go through the city centre

To much emphasis on the cycling minority. There seems to be a reasonable amount for the areas that need it.

Yes. Hereford still desperately needs a bypass. The number of cars is only going to increase. Reducing 50% of the road space to dedicated bus lanes is madness. Improve the road infrastructure and quality of road surfaces to improve safety for cyclists before adding cycle lanes.

I have lived in Hereford over 3 years and absolute no improvements have been made to the traffic flows. No good having a plan unless something is going to be done. I thought the council planned to turn off the traffic lights and see how traffic flows? There are many junctions that are very inefficient, keep the costs down by making simple improvements to improve capacity of major junctions. One example of very poor design is the right turn into Holmer Road by Coop garage. One car stops to turn right and the A49 stops all the way back into town! Cycle paths are bitty and not joined up. Stops me cycling more around town. Need places to lock up bikes so can go into shops. I don't use the buses as no stops near me. Don't waste money on green stuff in town - do that in the vast extent of green area outside town. Use the funds to do changes that will make a difference. Trees in tubs is a complete waste. Cost/benefit analysis must have been flawed. People won't come into town to use 'green open spaces' if the traffic is still a nightmare for driving or cycling. Improve traffic and cycling etc. first then provide open spaces when people start to come in.
Which areas of Hereford would benefit from better public transport? Please provide details in the box below.
Keep it cheap; stop over designing (or just control the costs) and let the improvements fund future upgrades.

Secure bike parking so don't have to carry a chain and lock around

No link from the north south cycle route to the route out west via moor farm. No cycle routes to cross town or go out east. Cycle lanes won't be used if get overgrown (Aylestone hill) or accumulate debris from the roads that cause punctures. Cars are alway given priority over cycle routes so a person on a bike is for ever stopping every 50 yards due to crossings etc. Motor vehicles running red lights is endemic (countrywide). No respect from motor vehicles for speed limits e.g. Roman road. Pointless charging speed limits as no one polices them anyway. The city is infested with traffic lights and the modes of operation are very inefficient. Don't try and do too much/many schemes, focus on a few and get them right. e.g. Asda roundabout, Right turn at Holmer coop garage, Holmer roundabout. Maybe also consider some one way systems. Best way is to measure the problems properly (e.g. do a proper measurement plan around problematic junction) then you can identify root causes and fix the root cause instead of guessing the solution (like I have with some of my comments)

Grade costs - e.g. make merton meadow free and ones in town expensive (sorry, even more expensive)

Anyone driving in down white cross road has to go through steels of westgate junction as no car parks before this. Same for drivers entering town via Aylestone hill - no car parks on commercial street area. etc. Don't waste money yet on changing car parks to green space - not good payback. Fix the traffic first.
What else could we introduce to encourage you not to take your car into the city? Please describe in the box below.
Mostly as mentioned joined up cycle paths from all directions into town plus, cycling on existing cycle paths is very stop start as have to give way to motor vehicles all the time.
Is there anything else we should be considering for development within the city? Please describe in the box below.
Don't waste money on green spaces as will bring minimum benefit. Already have very easy access to cathedral and castle green etc. Yes, accommodation provided the traffic isn't made worse. Just fix the traffic and not try and do too much. Focus and do a few things well instead of many things poorly.
Are there any specific heritage assets we need to bear in mind? Please describe in the box below.
Already plenty to see. Maybe a bit more info around, e.g. castle green history. Develop some walking routes around town for visitors, and add lots of info around the route. Don't do any infrastructure changes until popularity of routes is validated.
Is there anything else you think we should be doing to enhance the natural environment within the city? Please let us know in the box below.
Urban tree planting should be a future project, focus on getting the basics right first.
